Covers off plans for university of tasmania campus move

The move will give the university of Tasmania a new base of operations and, in its own words, ensure a new "high-potential" university in the country.

University of Tasmania's new headquarters in Townsville will have the capacity to accommodate 6,400 students

The move is another step towards attracting new funding, with $5 million raised for the university of Tasmania to be used for campus improvements.

TAS vice-chancellor for external affairs and public relations Professor Martin Snedden said he welcomed the move because he was proud of the university's "world-class reputation".

"The university is very proud of being the state's leading university in the area of international studies and international diplomacy," he said.

"We have a proud history of working with international partners and we have a great partnership with the US Government.

"It is a major opportunity for us to expand into overseas studies."

Professor Snedden said the university had no plans to relocate to another state but would focus on attracting students of both genders and a variety of levels.

"The university of Tasmania has no intention of moving, but will continue working closely with regional governments and other stakeholders across the region to identify new venues," he said.

"We will look at what the regional implications are to all three of our campuses and will continue to work to secure funding that may be appropriate in each of them."

University vice-chancellor for community safety Stephen Green said the university wanted to be able to be a "provider of equal opportunities to students of all backgrounds", particularly women and LGBTI students.

A spokesman for the university said the development was not to replace its existing Canberra campus.

"As is our practice, we are also continuing to work with the region in a number of ways," he said.

"The University of Tasmania will continue to work closely with the region as it prepares for this important announcement and further strategic planning.

"As with all future construction work, it is very difficult to predict when the University of Tasmania will have construction work started on any construction project and, while that development is underway, we welcome local business as they are looking to move forward with their plans to open a school within our facilities."

The university said it would also be taking the opportunity to enhance the community.

"This development in Townsville is a way for the University of Tasmania to add to and enhance the diversity of its diverse student community," Professor Snedden said.

"We have a wonderful history of welcoming students, and this is the best way to enhance the quality of life for our students by ensuring they feel that they are welcome at all times."
